Yahoo Games
Every now and than we need to test ourselves against people in backgammon who are outside our normal friendship or family groups. In the search for meaningful competion in cyberspace, we have found that Yahoo Games is an excellent place to play backgammon online.
The first best thing we found about playing on Yahoo was the fact that we never had a problem getting in a game. There are usually quite a lot of people just lurking around in there waiting for you to click the "Join" button and start playing them at backgammon. Also the level of competition is pretty good. The range goes from the rank amateur to those who probably make a pretty good living just playing backgammon all day. The rooms are broken up by skill level, so if you are just starting out, there is little chance of you getting ambushed by somebody who could send the world champion into a fit of loser rage.
Another nice aspect of this is that for those who like to play while at work, Yahoo usually sails right through the corporate firewalls. Most online backgammon sites will immediately set off a message that firmly states that the site has been blocked. Yahoo doesn't seem to have this problem. Of course this is a generality, and some companies might block Yahoo altogether, but in our experience, we have been able to get through just fine.
Those who have Yahoo email addresses can just log in as normal, click the "Games" item from the menu bar on the lefthand side and start playing. No software to download, no pop-ups, no spam emails: just simple online play.
