First Internet Backgammon Server (FIBS)

Developer: Andreas Schneider

Cost: Free

System Requirements: None. You can access FIBS directly through the telnet, or through a supported browser or downloadable interface. You may be required to register with the interface provider as well as with FIBS.

Tournaments: Event tournaments only; available through TourneyBot, an automated tournament manager.

Deposits and Cashouts: Not applicable

Support: Limited help files are available, along with some FAQs, but FIBS seems to rely on their forum board and the kindness of other users to address any additional questions.

The FIBS site can be played directly on telnet and also offers a wide range of options for interfacing with different operating systems. Interfaces are available to download and there are also some browser-based interfaces that do not require you to download software. While this site provides a lot of flexibility in methods of connecting and interfacing, it is a little daunting for the novice online player or those who don’t speak a word of bits or bites. A certain amount of prerequisite knowledge is required to understand the choices available and which is the best suited to the individual user. Also, the site is a bit “techie” with its initial introduction and listing of available options. The Connecting to FIBS section begins “If you are familiar with telnet and don't mind an ASCII board…” hmmm, what? The history portion of the site gives the impression that this is for the chat-room/community-of-friends type player. However, if you follow the links of information, history, usage, etc., you get several sets of instructions on what to do if you become offended by belligerent, colorful, or racial language.
