501 Essential Backgammon Problems, New Ideas in Backgammon

You've heard the saying, "Mind over matter"? Well, a good backgammon book can put you in a position as a smarter player with a mind made of better brain matter - or something like that. Our point is, finding a few good backgammon books will certainly improve your game, and if not rapidly then slowly but surely. We faithfully once again offer our suggestions for a few good backgammon books to add to your library:

501 Essential Backgammon Problems
Author: Bill Robertie

This is perhaps Bill Robertie's best book for the intermediate-level player. The strength and value of this book lies in the 31 chapters inside, which Robertie introduces with general guidelines on a specific area of the game, and then he follows each up with game situation problems that illustrate the concepts. Even beginners would love this book, as they can target just a handful of specific areas of the game to focus on and soak in Bill's advice.

New Ideas in Backgammon
Author: Kit Woolsey & Hal Heinrich

Hindsight is 20/20, isn't it? Well, yes it is, and aside from being a cliche, it has a teaching purpose, too. This is the essence of Heinrich and Woolsey's book, a good one for advanced players, as they have gathered a collection of positions that even top players got wrong in actual tournaments. They alertly point out the expert's error and then offer you the play that SHOULD have been made (and they'll even tell you why, too). Excellent commentary is sprinkled in with artful advice on these "learning the hard way" experiences.
