This is essentially a series of backgammon problems, each with a solution provided by the author. This is a fantastic book for the intermediate and advanced player. Woolsey and Heinrich skillfully dissect 104 difficult positions that top human players got wrong in actual tournaments, pointing out the expert's error, then show what play should have been made and why. Readers learn more than the solutions to these specific problems, they also learn how to reason about all future positions they might encounter.

Author: Bill Robertie
Publisher: Gammon Press
Originally Published: 2000

This two-volume (Vol.1 is on Positional Play, vol. 2 on Technical Play) dissertation on modern backgammon is now considered the Bible of the game. Robertie organizes and explains many high-level backgammon concepts over the course of 400+ positions with clear, easy to understand effective examples and analysis. These books are priced more like college text books than gaming books, but their analysis is deep and extensive. Volume 2, the technical part of the game, addresses ace-point games, back-games, and bear-offs, etc.

This book is hard to find, but the analysis is terrific, with the author taking a very scientific approach and putting a lot of work into rolling out many of the diagrammed positions.
