Backgammon Replies to Opening Moves
In the game of Backgammon, there are few moves as important as the opening moves - but there is one that can be as influential, and that is the reply. The reply is essentially the other player's response to the first player's opening move. A proper reply can help set the tone for the game, and take away any advantage the initial player may has coming.
There are a number of sharp moves you can make to counter, or reply, to an opening move. First, when trying to hit a blot (which means to land on an exposed checker, sending it to the bar) always try to hit a blot on the enemy side of the board.
If you can hit two blots, go for it. This is better than one and making a point. (Making a point refers to covering one of your own blots with a checker.) Another good move is to mirror your opponent's play - if he makes a deep point on the home board, you can too, if the dice are favorable.
The last two points involve specific situations, such as when your opponent makes a five point. In this case, try for an advanced anchor by splitting your back checkers. Finally, if your opponent splits HIS back checkers, be mindful about leaving any indirect shots vulnerable.
These and other replies are designed to counter advantages an opponent gains from a smart opening move, but they are not by any means all the possible replies, just a few good guidelines to get you thinking.
