Backgammon Tips. Part 2
1. When there is no reason to leave yourself open, don't do it.
2. If a loose hit gives you a chance to save the game rather than sit and die: go for it.
3. When behind, don't just lie down and die; work harder to make something happen. If you are already behind, getting another checker sent back may be more beneficial than the situation you currently are in.
4. When your back is up against the wall, timing, a playable back game, and avoiding gammon should be on your mind.
Remember: securing a second point in your opponent's board when way behind is never a bad thing.
5. It is often best to use your 6's to jump a 5pt prime since you may not get another try any time soon.
6. There is no need to completely leave your opponent's board to control the outfield when there is a chance of picking up another checker. You may be able to jar another checker loose when your opponent is behind a prime after a late hit.
7. It is usually good strategy to make the move that your opponent would least like you make. When in doubt, put your checkers (or leave your checkers) where they belong.
8. Don't think about the bad things that could happen, think in terms of the risk versus the reward. Risk is certainly there, but is the reward even greater? Being on the bar vs. a 4pt board is no fun.
9. When your opponent is in a tough position, don't give them an easy out. Don't play loose and leave plenty of blots around when your opponent has a lot of return shots and a tough 4pt board to come in on.
10. Remember: Patience is always a virtue in backgammon, impatience a potentially deadly sin.
