Ideal Qualities in Backgammon Boards

When shopping for a backgammon set there are certain qualities you should keep in mind, beyond simply its price. Many expert backgammon players often will customize their sets as opposed to buying one "off the rack".

1) When picking out a backgammon board it is extremely important that the checkers slide smoothly across the surface.

2) Look for a playing surface that is both durable and easy to clean.

3) Ideally, your playing surface shouldn't be too hard or too soft, like Goldilocks, you want a playing surface that is "just right". Remember, you don't want the dice to hit and slide, nor do you want them spinning forever. Hard surfaces (and this includes hard leather) can result in both happening.

4) You don't want the walls to be too high.

5) Make sure the bar will accommodate the checkers so they don't fall off.

6) You should have storage space along the edge of the board for the checkers.

7) Avoid boards where the walls are too thick as it will make the board very heavy and difficult to carry around.

8) Make sure the dice cups are both of good quality and fit inside the board.

9) Players should look for a set of checkers which have a suitable weight/size ratio, together with the right friction characteristics for sliding purposes. In the US, tournament players prefer 1 3/4 inch to 1.75 inch (4.4 cm) checkers. Only occasionally are larger or smaller sets seen at tournaments. The reason is that this size is a compromise between the ergonomics of play (large pieces are easier to see and feel better moving around) and the restrictions of travel.

10) While color schemes are very important, this is usually not available on lower end boards. A top board maker will have a wide range of color schemes to choose from.
