Rolling Sets

Rolling sets is a variant way to play backgammon that can be very useful tool when practicing your strategies and tactics. It is a sort of backgammon that is very similar to solitaire in that you can play it all on your own.

This way of playing doesn't change the rules of backgammon at all, and in fact, it can be used with just about any other variant of backgammon. All that is required is that you pre-roll the dice and record the results before playing the game. Doing this allows you to keep working with the same set of rolls over and over again. This allows you to try different plays while not having to worry about the largest variable in backgammon, the dice.

Generally, rolling a set requires you to make between fifty and one hundred rolls before sitting down and playing, but once you have done so, you can play that set of rolls over and over again. This allows you to work out your mistakes you have made with your rolls, and find how best to use them. You can also develop strategies and tactics in what could be considered a controlled environment.

Rolling sets also lets you play backgammon in situations where dice are unavailable or it would be difficult to use them, the back seat of a car on a long trip or an airplane for example. In this case, you may want to roll up a few sets before you start playing.
