Protest Signs Left at Home for This Berkeley Backgammon Tournament
Mention the California college town "Berkeley" to anyone older than 35 and images of student protest in the 1960s immediately pop into mind (younger readers can just Google the town and you'll get your history lesson). But check in on campus or around the town these days and you will find backgammon boards replacing protest billboards and hand-painted signs in dorm rooms as well as in cafe shops nestled throughout Berkeley streets.
If you needed proof, you should have been there for the "BG by the Bay," Backgammon tourney on Saturday, Nov. 11th. Although this tourney was not on the UC Berkeley campus, it still carried that campus stamp on it even on Peking Express.
For a tourney recap, call 831-688-9722 or visit the "BG By The Bay" website: http://www.bgbythebay.com/bgbb/
Flowers in the hair, sandals, or tie-dye shirts were optional. Advanced notice: if you didn't make it to Berkeley, there will be another "BG By The Bay" tourney coming up on Nov. 25th at the Britannia Arms in nearby Cupertino (home of Apple Computer, among other high-tech companies); backgammon brainiacs can get info on this tourney by calling the same number or visiting the same website listed above. This tournament is during Thanskgiving weekend, so plan accordingly - which means bring BYOTL (Bring Your Own Turkey Legs).
